Single - Silver Bullet
The first single from Young Elk’s third full-length album, ‘Silver Bullet’ investigates&#38;nbsp;the complexity of a mother/son relationship. How do codependence and control often become a quick fix, a silver bullet. Just some medicine to make the pain go away, etc. It never works like that, and if a mother has not done work on herself that silver bullet that medicine becomes poison.&#38;nbsp;

Single - Fist Fight“Fist Fight is a tender scene from the final days of my marriage to my wife of 16 years. Her deep, attending love for me. Wishing I would stop drinking. Wishing I would deal with my traumatic past in a way that would save us, even though I couldn’t/wouldn’t at the time.” -E. RudickSingle - Little String

Little String is about the collapse of the facade of the American family, and the fact that the bedrock of society and one’s identity may be tied together with a flimsy string that needs to be untied.
Album - Calm Down‘Calm Down’ was written when frontman Ezekiel J. Rudick was questioning a lot of things about his identity. His thoughts went as deep as the complexities of being in a marriage, and also strayed toward the idea of being in a band. He notes, “I was also figuring out how to process the toxicity of my family after realizing their implications in childhood trauma and abuse.” ‘Calm Down’ is an attempt to bring peace to a restless, weary soul plagued by family, a failing marriage, and questions about our daily relationships.
BIO
In 2015, after Ezekiel Rudick’s band Violent Psalms broke up, Nic Moen approached him about starting a new band. They had known each other for a long time playing shows together around town. Rudick had about 5 new songs he was kicking around that were a lot less of a loud indie rock band setup – they were a lot more ethereal, delving more into themes of faith, existentialism, and grief. After jamming through a few of the tunes, Nic brought in his long time friend and collaborator, Tony Reyes, to play bass and, after a very snobby Craigslist ad that Rudick posted for a second guitar player, they recruited recent Florida transplant Bruce Reed.

In very short order, Rudick was hospitalized for a severe lung infection that nearly claimed his life. During his month-long stay, the other members got together at a Jeremy Enigk show and basically agreed that Bruce and Tony would swap instruments — Tony being a melodic/experimental guitar virtuoso, and Bruce as an exceptional bass player and arranger. And that was the lineup ever since.

Photo Credit: Aubrey DockerySINGLE - GOD I’M FREAKING OUTThe final single from their debut EP, ‘God I’m Freaking Out’ was originally written as a slower ballad on keys. Once it reached the full band, it became more driven with a groove all its own. Callihan sings about desiring space and alone time to process emotions, while also riding the line of using space to be punitive and singing about stress tolerance/emotional regulation through the magic of long hot showers.SINGLE - BE YOUR BABY
The second single from Perish’s upcoming release, ‘Be Your Baby’, dials into the small-town roots of singer Katie Callihan. With a noticeable country twang throughout, the track meanders into more energetic territory as it builds.
SINGLE - COOL GUYS‘Cool Guys’ is the wistful first single from Perish’s debut EP. It began as a call to preserve one’s independence when in a romantic relationship. Asking for us not to fall for how a person brands themselves, how they look, but instead for how they behave and make decisions in their daily life, Callihan is at once introspective and triumphant. Admiration should come from something deeper, but it’s hard to see past the dark sunglasses sometimes.
Rue Defense · Perish - Cool GuysBIOOriginally the solo project of Florida-born songwriter Katie Callihan, Perish came into full bloom in Brooklyn through mutual connections and a shared love of performance. As part of a Sunday service at a local church, Callihan was introduced to long-time friends Sam Lopane, Austin (Chappie) Chappell, and John Dockery when she was scheduled to play with them as part of the rotating cast of musicians. Approaching them with some recent demos, she was overjoyed when they agreed to play with her in hopes of recording a new EP. Practicing in the dead of New York winter in a tiny, sweaty practice studio, the group was able to find a collective sound almost immediately.
After only two practices, the band drove up to Lincoln, Rhode Island, to record with Bradford Krieger at Big Nice Studio. Bonding in the car ride up, taking coffee breaks, and skateboarding through the warehouse-turned-studio, Perish became a cohesive group. Pulling from influences like Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief), Mothers, Land of Talk, Chet Baker, and Sharon Van Etten, the group leans on their shared rural roots while coping with the tension of urban living. Callihan’s ability to be both beseechingly open and emotional in her songwriting while embracing a carefree, often light-hearted attitude in person helps to infuse the songs with an unapologetic honesty.
The self-titled EP by Perish is their first recording. It will be released in the Fall of 2025 on Rue Defense. The first single, ‘Cool Guys’ is out July 11, 2025.

Single - Control

The final single from the&#38;nbsp; Committeemen (S)HITS EP, 'Control' takes governmental restrictions to task. Using religious ideology to limit lifesaving healthcare and create dangerous situations for women in Texas and around the country, the powers that be exert backwards&#38;nbsp;methods&#38;nbsp;on&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;populace&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;ensure&#38;nbsp;an&#38;nbsp;impoverished&#38;nbsp;workforce&#38;nbsp;dependent&#38;nbsp;on&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;almighty&#38;nbsp;dollar&#38;nbsp;at&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;expense&#38;nbsp;of&#38;nbsp;actual rights&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;freedoms.
Single - Chew

Rue Defense · Chew
The third single from Committeemen's sophomore EP, 'Chew' is an energetic whirlwind in two parts. Presenting itself as a fast-paced punk track with emphasis on self-realization and exasperation with daily life, it devolves midway into a heavy-hitting, articulate instrumental.

Single - Old Rope

Rue Defense · Old RopeAlternating between dead-pan aphorisms and unbridled chaos, ‘Old Rope’ is the second single from Committeemen’s new EP. Confronting the sometimes nonsensical structure of our day-to-day, frontman DJ Gilmore questions. “If I came in first, then why did I finish last?” A frustration with societal imbalance and personal doubt are met with heavy rhythms and driving force.
Single - Therapy
Rue Defense · Therapy
The first single from Committeemen’s upcoming EP, ‘Therapy’ is a tongue-in-cheek look at the media-obsessed, toxic personalities running rampant in today’s society. Looking for answers to a changing world from podcast hosts and underqualified televangelists, a growing sect of vocal individuals believe that they couldn’t possibly be the problem and that it must be everyone else. “Not me! Not me!” they cry while refusing to accept any narrative but their own.BIO
It’s time to go home and you’re lost. A shadowy stranger approaches through the swirl of the rodeo crowd and offers a hand. The brim of his 10-gallon hat obscures his face. Hanging at his heart is a leather badge. Adorned with a gold Texas star, it reads: Committeeman.

Committeemen are hard to categorize. Pulling apart myriad influences at the seams and weaving something new from the scraps, they veer into territory occupied by bands like IDLES and Osees while keeping one foot planted in the early post-punk of Gang of Four and the other kicking tires with Parquet Courts.
Committeemen write about what they know: getting pissed off about the Texas Power Grid, grappling with jealousy, or just maligning their friends’ shitty advice over a backdrop of thunderous bass, thumping drums, and a dense whirl of effected guitars.

The band leaves it all on stage every time out. DJ Gilmore-Innis (vocals/guitar), Ken Dannelley (drums), Matt Kast (bass), and Graham Bell (guitar) produce bombastic, sweaty, heart-on-their-sleeves performances that churn the humid Houston night air into a froth.
They continue to build a steady following around their energetic live performances, sharing the stage with local and touring acts like The Dwarves, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Daikaiju, Tear Dungeon, Big Bill, 30 Foot Fall, CorMae, and the Phlegms. ‘(S)HITS’, the follow-up EP to the much-lauded 2023 'EXTENDED PLAY', is out now on Rue Defense.

Open Door Policy was recorded throughout a few sessions over a couple years.
“If I recall correctly, most of the songs were written in late 2020 and early 2021, and then recorded in May of 2021 at Big Nice Studio in Lincoln, Rhode Island, with the one and only Bradford Krieger.
Then, in May of 2022, there was a session meant for a different project, but it was unfortunately cut short. I believe that session resulted in ‘Rose Gold’, ‘Animal Control’, ‘Chowder Powder’, and a few other tunes that went on to have other lives.
Finally in July 2023, a few finishing touches were put on the album (woodwinds, some new vocals about a woodchuck infestation, etc). This session is where the name Open Door Policy came from – first day of the session, BK and I pulled up and the door to the studio was wide open. It apparently had been that way all night. Luckily, nothing was stolen and no woodchuck damage was detected.
Later that year, I was lucky enough to be introduced to the folks at Candlepin, and they helped quickly bring this album – which had admittedly been marinating way too long – into the world in the summer of 2024.” -AS (2024)

Self-described as “a label’s worst nightmare”, Alexei Shishkin can often be found playing pickup soccer in a Ridgewood park or doubling down on a soup and sandwich combo, but you’ll never see him take the stage.Shishkin’s style is equal parts prolific and poignant. Bringing an improvisational air to the bedroom slacker pop sound of the 90s and early 00s, his ability to build intersectional compositions from jazz voicings, simple loops, and musings on daily life results in a cathartic rush of content that is nowhere near slowing down. By embracing the rough edges and eschewing performance in favor of creation, his musically reclusive style has fed on itself and grown into a singular voice all its own.

“dagger was home-recorded in Queens, NY, in December 2023. The songs are mostly ‘stream-of-consciousness’ style experiments that started with drum tracks as the foundations (thank youto the folks at Drum Drops). From there I layered whatever seemed right over them, and before Iknew it there were 10 songs. The album art is a photo by Graham W. Bell of a basketball in mid-air at Rosemary's Playgroundoff the Forest Ave M train stop. I've always like the idea of a game-clinching shot being called a ‘dagger’, so I figured this was a great time to use that as an album name.“ -AS, Feb. 2024Credits:music + lyrics: Alexei Shishkindrums: Timmy Rickard, Ben Hampson, Steve Taylordrum engineering: Ben Thackeray, Ben Hillier, Billy Hallidaymastering: Conor Ryanspecial thanks: Graham W. dagger (2024)
Bell, Connor HickeyBio:

Self-described as “a label’s worst nightmare”, Alexei Shishkin can often be found playing pickup soccer in a Ridgewood park or doubling down on a soup and sandwich combo, but you’ll never see him take the stage.Shishkin’s style is equal parts prolific and poignant. Bringing an improvisational air to the bedroom slacker pop sound of the 90s and early 00s, his ability to build intersectional compositions from jazz voicings, simple loops, and musings on daily life results in a cathartic rush of content that is nowhere near slowing down. By embracing the rough edges and eschewing performance in favor of creation, his musically reclusive style has fed on itself and grown into a singular voice all its own.Goodbye Sunrise (2023)

Taking cues from his experimental tacts seen on previous releases like Buildings Furniture, Shishkin returns to his bedroom rock roots with a healthy dose of neo-soul sensibilities. In first single “What Time Is It?”, the jazz-inflected stylings are cut through by lilting background vocals provided by Katie Callihan (who features on several other tracks on the album), while Shishkin’s own lackadaisical delivery drives forward. The album serves as a medley of styles and moods that bounce from reverie to raucous as the tracks paint a picture of the constant inspiration, frustration, and consternation found in Shishkin’s 21st century New York.Previous:

Buildings Furniture:The first single from Alexei Shishkin's upcoming experimental album "Songs from the Money Pit" combines new elements like afrobeat drums, trumpet, and purposefully-autotuned vocals with the musician's signature jazz-inflected guitar. Presented as a slice-of-life conversation between two characters, it evolves into a dreamy, hazy duet.
Locked Out:The second single from Alexei Shishkin's 'Songs From The Money Pit', the groovy 'Locked Out' embraces purposeful experimentation on the part of the musician with obvious auto-tune and a variety of drum configurations. Like the album as a whole, 'Locked Out' is an exploration of afrobeat rhythms and instrumentation that diverges from Shishkin's previous outings. A singer-songwriter at heart, his ability to infuse jazz-inflected guitar and laidback lyrics about daily life into catchy arrangements has proved Shishkin a true auteur time and time again.

“carries the visceral impact of raw emotions“ - Various Small Flames

BIO:Simple Shapes are an enigmatic, emotional indie rock band from Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2019 by Pete Bensen (Bug Seance, Nonbinary Girlfriend) and Jeremiah Larsen (Myriads, New Here), they draw inspiration from bands like Archers of Loaf, Dinosaur Jr, and MJ Lenderman while walking the line between a revival of late 90s/early 2000s indie and more contemporary pop productions. Simple Shapes has played over 200 shows, toured nationally twice, and have gained a devout following. Their debut LP, ‘Sundial’, is out now.
SINGLE - I’VE NEVER LEARNED A LESSONThe fourth and final single from the Sundial LP, "I've Never Learned a Lesson" reflects upon the bittersweet and contradictory nature of nostalgia. The past, viewed through rose-tinted lenses, is perhaps not always a place you would even necessarily want to return to. Even if you did, maybe it wouldn't be the same. Sonically, the song builds momentum as it progresses, mirroring looking and moving forward.

Thematically, this single echoes ideas present throughout Sundial. The cyclical nature of the album, released on cassette and meant to be played on repeat, highlights the ever-moving nature of existence, the seasons of life, and our struggle to make sense of it all.SINGLE - THE BEAST OF GLACIER COUNTYThe sweetest song about roadkill you will ever hear.&#38;nbsp;

"Beast of Glacier County" is the&#38;nbsp;third single&#38;nbsp;from&#38;nbsp;Simple&#38;nbsp;Shapes'&#38;nbsp;Sundial&#38;nbsp;LP&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;recalls&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;specific&#38;nbsp;childhood&#38;nbsp;memory&#38;nbsp;of&#38;nbsp;songwriter&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;frontperson&#38;nbsp;Pete&#38;nbsp;Bensen.&#38;nbsp;They&#38;nbsp;recall&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;time&#38;nbsp;growing&#38;nbsp;up&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;western&#38;nbsp;Montana&#38;nbsp;when&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;body&#38;nbsp;of&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;dead&#38;nbsp;deer&#38;nbsp;that&#38;nbsp;had&#38;nbsp;been&#38;nbsp;struck&#38;nbsp;by&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;drunk&#38;nbsp;driver,&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;which&#38;nbsp;local&#38;nbsp;officials&#38;nbsp;dragged&#38;nbsp;their&#38;nbsp;feet&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;acting&#38;nbsp;upon,&#38;nbsp;attracted&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;young&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;hungry&#38;nbsp;bear,&#38;nbsp;who&#38;nbsp;instead&#38;nbsp;found&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;killed&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;neighbor's&#38;nbsp;pet&#38;nbsp;goat.&#38;nbsp;The&#38;nbsp;next-door&#38;nbsp;neighbor,&#38;nbsp;who&#38;nbsp;had&#38;nbsp;just&#38;nbsp;gotten&#38;nbsp;home&#38;nbsp;from&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;hospital&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;was&#38;nbsp;still&#38;nbsp;using&#38;nbsp;a&#38;nbsp;wheelchair&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;get&#38;nbsp;around,&#38;nbsp;wheeled&#38;nbsp;himself&#38;nbsp;out&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;his&#38;nbsp;back&#38;nbsp;porch,&#38;nbsp;where&#38;nbsp;he&#38;nbsp;shot&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;killed&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;bear.&#38;nbsp;In&#38;nbsp;this&#38;nbsp;song,&#38;nbsp;Bensen&#38;nbsp;speaks&#38;nbsp;to&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;bear,&#38;nbsp;perhaps&#38;nbsp;violent,&#38;nbsp;but&#38;nbsp;also&#38;nbsp;young,&#38;nbsp;naive,&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;hungry.

SINGLE - SUN BELTThe second single off their upcoming LP, "Sun Belt" is a song that feels like walking into a haze of nostalgia. Evoking subtle moments that reflect back in a rosy film grain like riding in a car with friends while the sun sets behind you on the highway. Featuring intertwining, harmonizing vocal melodies, Sun Belt is full of sparkling electric licks that blend seamlessly with coarse, low rhythm guitar. All this evokes cruising the backroads on a Saturday night with nothing better to do than laugh with friends.

SINGLE - MALLARDThe first single from Simple Shapes' debut LP, 'Mallard' sees the Portland-based project expanding outward into new sonic territories from their 2022 'Soundtrack EP'. It explores themes of feeling stagnant by using the imagery of a potted plant that, left in the window, dreams of being in a garden outside. Bringing together myriad influences, they combine tender ruminations with fuzz-drenched blasts of emotion in sharply contrasting dynamic passages.
-------------------------------------
PREVIOUS RELEASES
SOUNDTRACK EP:The debut EP from Portland's Simple Shapes, Soundtrack EP sees the band expanding their sound in a variety of directions. Filling out the intricate songwriting of vocalist Pete Bensen, the arrangements hinge on melodic tensions between multiple guitars, bass, synth, saxophone, and the inspired drumming of Jeremiah Larsen.

Second single 'Tortoise Party' received accolades from outlets like Various Small Flames who noted "does little to live up to its chelonian title, the relaxed tones soon kicking into higher gear and finding an infectiously skipping rhythm.". The EP will be released on a limited edition cassette.

Simple Shapes is part of Brooklyn/Houston label Rue Defense.

TORTOISE PARTY SINGLE:
Tortoise Party is the second single from Simple Shapes' sophomore EP which releases November 4, 2022 as a cassette on Rue Defense. Recorded by the band in their Portland studio, it starts off in the mellow zone of bands like Title Fight's later output, but quickly evolves into its own realm of layered guitars and energetic movement. Singer Pete Bensen notes about the non-sequitur title: "Tortoises are cool."

CASSINGLE RELEASE:Released as a limited edition cassingle, Florence/Figure it Out hinges on two songs that ask for a deeper look into the historical and recent past.&#38;nbsp; Florence takes a look back by centering on imagery of the Renaissance in Florence, Italy while also reflecting on feelings of belonging in regard to the place and people there. It asks for reflection on ideas of place and time as we consider our history. Figure It Out evokes bouts of nostalgia brought on by small actions like dancing alone in one’s room, smoking on the roof, and other daily activities. Given the time to think back on these seemingly innocuous moments, their true importance as meaningful events becomes clear.&#38;nbsp;The cassingle was recorded in the Simple Shapes' home studio, Kiki Cabana, and produced and mixed by Elly Swope. The band will be releasing this song as an A/B single on cassette with Houston/Brooklyn-based label Rue Defense, with a full press push, and supporting shows.

PAST RELEASES:
Simple Shapes’ first single, Shorty McFly, is a nostalgic tune that picks up the themes and imagery of “ghost-hunter” television shows to examine the feeling of being ghosted in a relationship. Starting slowly with acoustic guitar and vocals, the song ramps up to an all-out jam reminiscent of both the chaotic fear of a haunting and the desperate confusion caused by a sudden emotional event.&#38;nbsp; Shorty McFly was recorded by Bensen and Larsen at the band’s home studio, Kiki Cabana, with additional engineering, production, and mixing by Elly Swope. It was mastered by Amy Dragon at Telegraph Audio.Since its release, Shorty McFly has garnered critical acclaim and radio play on Portland favorites Freeform, XRAY, and Shady Pines radio, as well as on KZAX in Bellingham, WA.

Bio:

“I was in sad bands, now I’m trying to make happy-sounding sad music.”
The new project from prolific Northwest songwriter Ezekiel Rudick, goodgrief draws inspiration from the depths of memory and the gray skies of Seattle in equal measure. Written, performed, and produced by the artist in his home studio, the first single, “this one’s about you” draws inspiration from the early ‘90s shoegaze sounds of bands like Drop Nineteens and Low while infusing it with the same rich poetic and sonic depth Rudick has brought to both his long-running project Young Elk and his collaborative effort with Starover Blue’s Kendall Sallay, The Slow Sound.

The debut LP, ‘love birds’ mines the depths of emotional turmoil and nostalgia in equal parts. These melancholy aspects act as a foil to Rudick’s energetic performances and catchy riffs that seem looser and more free than his work in previous projects. ‘love birds’ was released on Sept. 1, 2023 on Rue Defense.</description>

CURRENT RELEASE:The sophomore EP from T.C. Brownell's Ground Loops, When A Stoppable Force Meets A Movable Object, sees the multi-instrumentalist crafting synthy compositions with deceptively poignant lyrics backed by his signature compelling bass work. Moving back to the Pacific Northwest, Brownell mines that region’s artistic heritage and tempers some of the urban edge of the East Coast with a mossy coating of lush new sounds.Side note: Yuuki Matthews (The Shins, Deep Sea Diver) mixed and added some production touches to this EP.
BIO:

The solo project of TC Brownell (former Wild Pink, Dead Painters), Ground Loops thrives on minimal arrangements and a knack for letting each sound breathe and grow in its own right. Primarily known as a bassist in his other bands, Brownell began branching out by experimenting with the world of synthesis. “It’s been a whole new world of creativity for me trying to learn to stop playing so much and let the sound design do the heavy lifting,” he noted. Trading loud practice spaces for headphones and a home studio as he adjusted to parenthood in 2020, Brownell learned to be patient with his compositions and to come back later to finish a take. Adding to this, the extended period of quarantine in NYC and around the country shifted the artistic process away from live collaboration toward self-editing and reflection. These themes of rumination on the past and thoughts of losing touch as the years progress show themselves in his lyrics. The debut EP from Ground Loops was recorded at Brownell’s home studio, mixed by Connor Hanwick, and mastered by Carl Saff. Its live component (upon the return of such things) will include Dan Keegan on drums.

PREVIOUS RELEASE:
I DON’T THINK HE REMEMBERS
The last track on Ground Loops’ debut EP, “I Don’t Think He Remembers” started as a rumination on someone Brownell knew long ago, but quickly expanded into a more general thought on a variety of people in his past. Thinking about everyone we’ve had as part of our lives, and how some grow closer and others detach completely, acts a central theme to which the song latches. At the end, Brownell notes, it became about everyone he’s lost touch with over the years, but he also sees himself mirrored in these long-lost acquaintances.
THEY WEREN’T MADE TO LAST

The first single from Ground Loops’ debut EP, “They Weren’t Made to Last” focuses on coming to grips with getting older and dealing with the various pitfalls that are inevitably part of the process. Though the message is somewhat melancholic, and sets the stage for similar reveries on childhood and friendship throughout the remaining tracks, a triumphant melody at the end lets in a bit of hope for the future. A straightforward but densely textured undercurrent is punctuated by Brownell’s subdued vocal delivery and bursts of sparkling synthesizer.
